Peel Regional Police say no charges are expected to be laid in the shooting death of a Toronto man who was killed during a home invasion-style robbery early this morning at an east Mississauga home.
Homicide investigators confirmed late this afternoon that Ibrahim Abukar, 22, was fatally shot at about 12:30 a.m. during a struggle with the homeowner, identified by neighbours as Mike Vrga, who confronted Abukar and his two accomplices.
"The deceased male was not a resident of the home and is alleged to have broken in with the two other males," police said in a release. "They were confronted by the homeowner and a struggle ensued resulting in the death of the young male (Abukar). At this time, investigators have no information connecting the deceased to the homeowner, who suffered minor injuries."
Police are still searching for the two other men who broke into the Corkstone Glade home and later fled on foot in an unknown direction. A police source says one of them may have a gunshot wound and officers are checking GTA hospitals to see if he may have been treated.
Vrga, the owner of the home, located near Dixie and Rathburn Rds., lives there with his wife and two young children, including a newborn baby, neighbours said.
He rents out the basement to a tenant and operates a heating and air conditioning company from the home, according to neighbours.
Police rushed to the home after receiving a call about a break-and-enter at about 12:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found Abukar in the basement suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
A gun has been recovered by police, according to a well-placed source, who added the incident occurred in the basement of the home, where a tenant lived.
Neighbours said a basement window was smashed during the incident.
The police dispatcher who took the initial 9-1-1 call said she had an open line with the caller and suddenly heard a gunshot.
Neighbours, too, said they heard noise.
"I heard a few gunshots, two or three maybe, and a lot of yelling,” said James Cirella. "My wife looked out the window just after midnight and there was a lot of commotion."
The family living in the house was on the main floor of the home at the time of the shooting.
“They are all okay,” said Const. George Tudos.
Police are still searching for a motive, Tudos added. They're unsure if it was a random home invasion or if the house was targeted.
“If anyone has seen or heard anything in relation to this event, homicide investigators would like to speak to them,” said Tudos.
